Join our improv stitching workshop in Melbourne and learn the mindful benefits of slow stitching!
As simple as cloth, thread and a needle, this is all it takes to:
  • Create - stimulate your mind by cultivating your new art practice or expand on your existing practice. We will play with colour, shape and texture.
  • Connect - make new connections with like-minded people and re-connect with your hands.
  • Calm - untangle your thoughts with the meditative practice of hand stitching.
Without rules or rulers, we will use remnant cloth fabric strips to learn quilting techniques including hand piecing/sewing, pressing and trimming to create a freely designed quilt square/block based on the traditional Log Cabin block.
We will then explore fundamental hand embroidery techniques to mindfully add to your patchwork creation and touch on topics such as up-cycling, darning and more.
This experiential workshop is based in a heritage-listed converted theatre in the heart of Footscray. Reminiscent of sewing circles of the past, the workshop will be held in the teacher's home gallery. You will have the opportunity to connect with your creativity, relax your mind and immerse yourself in the therapeutic act of hand stitching.
By the end of the session, you will leave with new simple slow stitching techniques to continue your own practice and a hand-stitched and embroidered creation to cherish.

Hello! My name is Phong, I am an award winning Naarm/Melbourne-based designer/maker/textile artist specialising in contemporary quilts and soft sculptures through improv patchwork and hand embroidery.
Previously a shoe designer/maker, I took the opportunity to work in textile-based social enterprises in Asia, reinforcing my artisan ethos of the slow and thoughtful hand-work process and its connection to society and the environment. Taking inspiration from these experiences, I developed my textile practice upon returning to Australia in 2018.
Using up-cycled/dead-stock fabrics and natural dyes, I prioritise social and environmental care in my practice. I take a considered and intuitive approach, responding to materials and my surroundings. Applying the traditional techniques of hand-quilting and embroidery, assemblage and patchwork, I work with an overtly free hand approach to build compositional complexity.
My work has been exhibited at The Wangaratta Art Gallery, QuiltCon (USA), SchoolHouse Studios Gallery, Linden New Art Gallery and The Australian Tapestry Workshop.
I have collaborated with The Social Studio, The Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild and The Australian Tapestry Workshop/Melbourne Fashion Festival to facilitate improv hand quilting/stitching and natural dyeing workshops. I have also facilitated workshops overseas in Nepal and Vietnam. I am currently a 2024 Artist in Residence at The Australian Tapestry Workshop.
I enjoy teaching and sharing knowledge with others and am here to help you explore your inner creativity.
