What you'll do

Are you curious about Gelli plate printing or have an unused Gel plate in your art cupboard?

This session will give you uninterrupted playtime to learn the basics plus heaps of tips and tricks to make gel prints that look amazing.

A gel plate and roller are supplied, with step-by-step instruction and guidance from your tutor.

You’ll learn about ghost printing, layering, composition, and how to make eye-catching colour combinations. During the session, you'll make many unique prints to frame, to embellish with mixed media, or cut up for card making.

You’ll also learn how to make a homemade gelatine plate.

Suitable for all levels of art experience, including curious beginners or if you just want to have lots of creative fun!

What to bring

Apron and nametag
Acrylic paint - we recommend artist quality like Atelier or Golden Open but bring whatever you have to try them. Colours - a basic yellow/red/blue, purple, white, paynes grey. Please note that student quality paints may produce poor results and be more difficult to work with.
Objects to print with - flat semi-dry leaves (press in phone book), lace, thread, string, rubber stamps, stencils.
Special papers to print on - we'll supply basic papers including plain, music paper, and book pages, but you might have something special at home you'd like to try.
Snacks and drinks, something to eat for lunch if you like.

We can supply acrylic paints for a small charge - select the option when booking in.

Art from the Urban Wilderness is located at Hive Studios in the suburb of Banyo, 15 km from the centre of Brisbane City. By Car – via the Gateway Motorway, take Exit 112 at the Nudgee Service Centre. By Train – walk from Northgate Station (2 kilometres) or Banyo Station (1.2 kilometres) or catch an uber or taxi from the station (1-2 minutes drive).

Your teacher can also travel within 50 kms of Banyo, to a venue of your choice for a private class

Sandra Pearce

Sandra Pearce is a Brisbane/Meanjin based artist working with artist books, printed images and paper installations. Her art practice responds to ideas relating to nature-human conflicts, the impacts of urbanisation and the human manipulation of landscape.

Sandra has exhibited widely in both regional and private art galleries and has participated in several artist-in-residence programs including Curtin Springs (NT) and Cataract Gorge (TAS).

Art from the Urban Wilderness is a large community art studio located at Hive Studios in Banyo, northside Brisbane.

The studio was founded by artist Sandra Pearce in 2022, and specialises in printmaking, papermaking, drawing, sketching and artist books. We offer workshops, courses, social art days, and artist talk events.

Our mission is to build an inclusive art community that nurtures creative authenticity, confidence and resilience. We also believe in the power of art to break the cycle of disaffection towards nature, to enrich lives and inspire care for the environment.

Our studio is also available for hire for creative events, meetings, gatherings, and art workshops.
